Adult Drumming Classes

Weekly African Drumming Classes

Teambeat offers authentic African drumming classes with Master Drummer Tuza from Ghana, an immersion into the rich musical culture of West Africa.

When Tuza was just 6 years old he began his disciplined training in traditional drumming and dancing. Tuza has worked with The Dance Factory, Ghana’s national percussion ensemble. Teambeat is privileged to share Tuza’s extraordinary talent, extensive teaching experience and vibrant energy to the drum and dance community in Australia.

Beginners Drum Courses

Beginners Drum Course

For those with not much or no previous experience. Structured in 6 week cycles these classes teach a new rhythm every course. It is preferable to join at the start of the cycle.

The course begins with the basics: playing techniques, hand positions and getting the best sounds from the drum. Students are introduced to exercises to develop dexterity and coordination. Students move on to learn a rhythm, being part of a groove from early on, having fun and focusing on their part while other rhythms are being played.

$135 per course or $25 drop in @ Forest Lodge Public School, cnr Ross St and Bridge Rd, Forest Lodge (near Glebe). Bus #470 from Central or park on school grounds.

6.30pm-8pm Wednesday nights. Bookings required. BYO or drum provided free of charge.

See below for course start dates.

Intermediate/Advanced Drum Classes

For those with some experience these classes will explore rhythms and traditional songs from the various tribes of Ghana as well as other countries in West Africa including Guinea, Senegal, Mali, The Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso. The classes will explore more intricate rhythms in different time signatures, that are played at quicker tempos.

Students will learn all parts of the rhythm from the initial call to begin, the bass drum (dundun) part, the various djembe or kpanlogo parts, the break or ‘chorus’, bell pattern and shaker part. Students will learn how the various parts interlock in polyrhythm.

Advanced students will be encouraged to practise soloing techniques, leading the music, improvisation, and the interaction between drumming and dancing.

Students are also challenged to sing traditional songs while playing.

$135 per 6 week course or $25 drop in @ Forest Lodge Public School, cnr Ross St and Bridge Rd, Forest Lodge (near Glebe). Bus #470 from Central or park on school grounds.

8-9.30pm Wednesday nights. Bookings required. BYO or drum provided free of charge.

See below for course start dates.
